WILLIAM GRAY: BACKGROUND
An award-winning journalist, author and photographer, Will has 30 years’ experience in communications – working for magazine publishers, conservation organisations and as a successful freelancer. A zoologist, conservationist and passionate advocate of responsible tourism, his career has been built on a love of the written word – and its ability to move people to take action.
Zoologist, Author & Conservationist
Will graduated in zoology from Durham University in 1990 before spending six weeks working as a volunteer on the Great Barrier Reef’s Heron Island. His first book, Coral Reefs & Islands – the Natural History of a Threatened Paradise was published at the age of 23 and commended in the Conservation Book Prize. Proceeds from the sale of the book supported various marine conservation projects, while Public Lending Rights were donated to the World Land Trust.
Consolidating his passion for conservation and communication, Will then spent several years working as Public Affairs Officer for the RSPB’s Central England region and Development Manager for the Coral Cay Conservation Charitable Trust. Both roles focussed on the production of vibrant and engaging content in support of the charities’ conservation, marketing and fundraising activities, as well as event and exhibition planning, educational resources, newsletters, presentations and media interviews. Will was responsible for liaising with stakeholders in conservation projects ranging from the reintroduction of red kites in the UK to establishing a community marine reserve in the Philippines.
Travel Writer, Photographer & Presenter
Will has written for numerous publications, including The Sunday Times, The Times, The Sunday Telegraph, The Guardian, The Sun, The Independent, Condé Nast Traveller, National Geographic Traveller, Wanderlust and Sunday Times Travel Magazine and has won over 20 awards for journalism, including AITO Travel Writer of the Year and ‘Best Feature’ at the British Travel Press Awards. The author of the award-winning Travel with Kids and Wildlife Travel (both published by Footprint), he has also written books on subjects ranging from Athens to Zambia, adventure travel to islands of the world.
An award-winning photographer, Will’s travel, landscape and wildlife images are represented by AWL Images. He is a judge for the Wanderlust Travel Photo of the Year competition and leads small-group and one-to-one photography workshops. A former presenter on the BBC1 Holiday programme, Will also has interview experience across TV, radio and digital media. An experienced speaker, he has presented on cruise ships and at travel shows such as Destinations.
Editor, Content Provider and Communications Specialist
Will has held various editorial positions, including editor of Travel Africa magazine and Msafiri (the inflight magazine of Kenya Airways). He was also editor of the 101 Family Holidays website, working with founders Mark Hodson and David Wickers to produce the family edition of this pioneering website that attracts over four million viewers per year. Will is currently a contributing editor for Wanderlust, having written for the magazine since 1993. He has undertaken numerous publishing projects, from brochures and websites to digital magazines and promotional videos.
Most recently, Will worked as Head of Communications for the World Land Trust and Senior Content Editor for Discover the World, devising and writing brochures and magazines, scripting and presenting videos, hosting client events and producing engaging, targeted website and campaign copy.
From concept to print-ready PDF, Will has extensive experience of publishing and is highly proficient in the use of inDesign, Photoshop and Lightroom. He also produces commercial videos and interviews using Premier Pro.
