Responsible Travel Tips: Code Green for Hikers

Treading gently: hiker in the wilderness

1. Take biodegradable soap, shampoo and toilet paper, long-lasting lithium batteries and plastic bags for packing out all rubbish.

2. Use a water filter instead of buying bottled water and save fuel at remote lodges by ordering the same food at the same time. Only take a hot shower if the water has been heated by solar power.

3. If no toilet facilities are available, make sure you are at least 30 m from any water source.

4. Keep to trails to avoid erosion and trampling vegetation. Don’t take short cuts, especially at high altitude where plants may take years to recover.
