JAGUAR

More squat and powerful than a leopard, the jaguar (Panthera onca) is the New World's only big cat. Weighing up to 160kg, this elusive feline has a heavily muscled physique that makes it well adapted for hunting tapirs, peccaries, deer and even caiman in the wetlands and seasonally-flooded forests of tropical South and Central America. Classified as 'Near Threatened', the jaguar is most at risk from habitat destruction for cattle ranches.
